Oxides

Oxides are used to add colour to pottery – as featured on the TV show The Great Pottery Throw Down.

Oxides are the base pigments used to create prepared colours and stains. These versatile colouring oxides can be applied directly to clay, bisque, or unfired glaze using techniques like majolica, or used as stains in bodies and glazes to achieve their distinctive colours.

How oxides are used in pottery:

  • Mixing into slip: Oxides can be blended into a slip to create beautifully coloured slip for decoration or layering.
  • Glazing sculptures: Oxides are often used to glaze sculptures, adding depth and character to the finished piece.
  • Brushing onto pots: Oxides can be brushed onto pots to create striking metallic or iridescent finishes.

We’re thrilled to announce that a new range of powdered oxides has just arrived at Cromartie and is now available to order.
